Dr. Maria Montessori

Montessori Education is based upon the research, theories and teachings of Dr. Maria Montessori, an Italian physician and educator. Dr. Montessori believed that a child’s development and natural learning abilities should direct his or her education. She also noted that the child is extremely capable of determining his or her own educational path. The Montessori instructor, or directress, is simply a “guide on the side, rather than a sage on the stage.” Classrooms are multi-age so that children in various developmental stages are able to learn from one another while also working at their own pace. The Montessori materials are of particular importance, as they are multi-sensory and designed to invite the child to independently explore and develop an appreciation for learning.
